I called a window tint shop to get my front windows tinted. I showed him a picture of my Compass and he said the back ones are at 20% and that he'd match my front two for $90 before tax. Is it weird if I try to negotiate the price of window tinting? I kind of was planning to spend around $75.. Daihatsu . Braking ProblemsBraking systems represent an interaction of several different forces; mechanical energy moves though liquid to become thermal energy in the form of friction. If any part of this system fails, the entire car can go completely out of control. Heat Heat is your braking system's primary nemesis. A car carries a lot of kinetic energy when moving at highway speeds, and the braking system needs to convert all of it to frictional heat to slow the vehicle. Brakes rotors and pads can easily climb over 500 degrees, boiling the brake fluid and causing the metal in your brake pads to glaze over. Either of these will induce rapid "brake fade" or loss of braking performance. Pressure Loss The hydraulic portion of your braking system relies more on pressure than volume to clamp down on the pads, so any pressure loss will dramatically affect performance. Pressure losses can take the form of external leaks in the lines and calipers, or internal leaks in the form of leaking piston seals and bulging rubber brake lines. The last of these is the result of age-induced rubber softening, and can only be prevented by installing braided steel brake lines. Anti-Lock Failure Brake systems use wheel-speed sensors to determine if one wheel is moving slower than the others, which would indicate a lock-up. The entire ABS system may malfunction if any one of these sensors or the motors, i.e., modulators, that control the fluid pressure at each wheel fail.
Daihatsu . 1997 Pontiac Grand Am Brake TroubleshootingTroubleshooting brake problems in your 1997 Pontiac Grand Am just takes a few minutes using a logical and repeatable method of diagnosis. Each step in the process will allow you to rapidly evaluate the various components and functions of the brake system so you can develop an understanding of the overall condition of the brake system. When the system is evaluated in this manner, malfunctions become easy to identify and repair. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Step by Step : 1 Sit in the driver's seat. Turn the ignition key to the "Off" position. Push the brake pedal several times to eliminate any residual power assist function in the power brake booster. 2 Push the brake pedal down hard with your foot and hold it for 30 seconds. During this test, the pistons in the brake master cylinder will be forced past the vent and replenish ports in the master cylinder, and the system is closed. If, during this test, the brake pedal begins to drop to the floor, there is a leak present in a brake line, wheel cylinder or caliper. Inspect each wheel visually for fluid residue to find the leak. 3 Ease up pressure slowly on the brake pedal, without removing your foot, until you are applying about the same pressure to the pedal as you would at a stop light. This test allows the master cylinder pistons to slide back into the bore and center between the vent and replenish ports in the master cylinder. If the pedal begins to drop during this test, the master cylinder is faulty and should be replaced. 4 Start the engine while continuing to hold the pedal down. When the engine starts, the pedal should drop about 2 inches as the power assist is activated in the system. If it doesn't drop, check for a vacuum leak at the vacuum source on the power brake booster located behind the master cylinder. If no vacuum leak is found, replace the booster. 5 Release and press the brake pedal a few times with the engine running. If the engine stumbles or a steady hissing noise is heard, the vent valve in the booster is defective. Replace the booster. 6 Apply the parking brake and shift the Grand Am into gear. The parking brake should hold the vehicle under very light throttle. If the parking brake does not hold the vehicle, adjust the rear brake shoes and parking brake cable. 7 Test-drive the car at highway speed. Note how the brakes feel when decelerating. Grinding or vibration under braking indicates faulty brake rotors and brake pads. Replace the pads and rotors. *don't panic: The following sections take you step by step through the entire process. (V\ (T\ Although you can jump to any of the following sections to get specific information, I recommend that you read Chapter 6 before going any further. It will help you find your distributor and familiarize you with what each part looks like and does. Then return here and work your way through the rest of the sections in succession, using the ® and CD symbols to identify work that you can do on your particular system. If you go step by step, you can do everything you need to in the most effi cient order, thereby increasing the chances of your vehicle starting the first time you try it after the work is done. Remote your distributor cap (T) (T\ The distributor cap is the first thing to go. To remove it, follow these steps: 1. Find your distributor. 531

Use a long-handled screwdriver to loosen the distributor cap. Most caps are held in place by either screws (see Figure 12-13) or clips (see Figure 12-14). 3. Now that your distributor cap is free, remove it without removing any of the wires that are attached to the cap. Place it to one side and take a look inside your distributor (see Figure 12-15). Does the stuff in there look like the replacement parts you bought? Look at the structure of the rotor (and the points and condenser, when you get to them). They should be similar, although some parts may be made of plastic instead of metal. If they look different, you've got the wrong parts. Go back to the auto parts store and start over. As I mentioned earlier, you don't have to deal with adjusting or replacing traditional points and condensers. All you have to do is check and change your spark plugs now and then and check for a defective distributor cap or rotor if your engine starts running roughly or stops running completely. Because there are many types of electronic ignition systems, and adjustments usually require expensive tools and specialized expertise compared to conventional ignitions, I strongly advise you to rely on a good automotive technician if neither the cap nor the rotor appears damaged.
